Men's Bowling Club News

Congratulations to Aaron Teys who won the World Youth singles event at Broadbeach defeating Corey Wedlock in the semi-final and Welshmen Ross Owen in the final. Aaron also teamed up with Ellen Ryan to win the mixed pairs as well.

Congratulations to the Warilla side who won the Reg Evans shield after destroying Dapto Citz in the final.

Congratulations to Jesse Noronha and Matt Miles who defeated Joel Mulholland (subbing for Toby Peters) and Shane Leonard in the final of Zone Pairs and now go to State Finals in October.

The World Cup is over for another year with Lucy Beere winning the Ladies event and Jeremy Henry winning the Men’s event. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ian and Paul for their hard work throughout the event and Trevor for doing most of the driving duties and all the markers, umpires and volunteers who help make the event a great success.

The next Bowls Premier League event is on at Nae Nae, Wellington, New Zealand from 22-26 April and will be broadcast live on Fox Sports. Go the Silkari Illawarra Gorillas!!

Warilla has nine pennant teams with a team entered in every grade and additional teams in the 6’s and 7’s competitions. Alex Marshall is making a comeback to the Gorillas for pennant season and it’ll be sensational to see Tattie back in the green and white. Pennants commences late this year (28 April) due to the Commonwealth Games. Go the Gorillas!!

Bowls Premier League

The Illawarra Gorillas made their debut in the Bowls Premier League this November and what a debut it was! After four tough days of nail biting competition the Gorillas scraped through to the minor semi-final, but it was on and up from there. Firstly beating a red hot Alex Marshall and his Brisbane team in the minor semi-final, then following up with a great win, sealed by a Jeremy Henry bomb in the final against the Murray Steamers.

And so the debutants made it to the Grand Final, only to go down to an in form Sydney Lions team and finish runners-up in the tournament. A sensational result which would not have been without our major sponsor, Silkari, and our sleeve sponsor XXXX Gold. The next instalment of the BPL is in April 2018, to be played in Wellington New Zealand.

Supporters shirts are now available for sale in the bowls shop for $49.50. So buy your gear and get behind the team in April.

Warilla was well represented at the District Open/ Seniors Fours. Our team comprising of Sheila Martin ,Gonny Ders, Mary Astill and Kathy Douglas won the Open Fours at the Final held in Kiama and our Seniors team of Julea Morgan, Leone Burnett, Maureen Murphy and Vicky Turner won the Seniors competition. Runners-up in the Seniors were another Warilla team consisting of Jessie Taylor, Mary Sheather, Shirley Lindsay and Betty Anderson. Congratulations girls.

On the 5th February we held our President’s Day and 53rd Birthday. Beautiful weather and the addition of our annual visit  from Castle Hill made it one of the friendliest events on our Calendar.

President Christine was thanked for her contribution and leadership of the club over the past 3 years. Visitors, friends and members enjoyed a pleasant lunch and concluded the day with the with the cutting of the Birthday Cake.

The Pennants Season is drawing to a close at District level with our No. Ones having won and will go on to Regional Play-off in Bargo. The Threes will play a District Play-off for the flag at Warilla. The Fours have won their section and will compete in the Play-off, also to be played at Warilla on the 16th, 17th and 19th of April. A wonderful effort, go Gorillas!

Belated Greetings to all Players and Supporters, better late than Never they say.  Following great falls of rain around the area a lush, but slower surface presented itself to the 38 Players who fronted. Due to the said rain it appeared that all Back Nine holes had been mowed the day before causing full maintenance on The Front Nine as we commenced , ALL FROM HOLE NUMBER ONE, so we had a bit of a Bankup but the only drawback was that Poppa Smurf was amongst The Tailenders for Lunch back at HQ.

Being a little late myself due to a lineup for my Caffeine Hit enroute to the Course, I was partnered with our Hard Working Starters, Rob “POPPA” Standing, Ian Dawes and ROY THE BOY CADDICK. As I said to Roy it was apt because I was listening to a new ROY “THE BIG O “ CD dubbed with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, a must for any Orbison Fans.

But back to the GOLF …………. the Camaraderie between THE UK BOYS (or lack thereof)  was “Colourful” to say the least and they used words that would have Redfaced Ronnie Little. But somehow we got through the Round to be appropriately greeted by a SIX FOOT RED BELLY BLACK on the 18th Green …….. but he didn’t like the Look of Roy’s PUTTER ………come to think of it Roy might have been happy if the serpent had taken it back into the reeds with him.I shall send an Ian Dawes Pic of the Beast under separate Email !!

Once again the Competition was fierce , particularly in A Grade with The Top three finishing on 40 points , which is a credit to our intrepid Handicapper, Brian Constable, whose attention to detail after all rounds is much appreciated by all. Big Hitting Vic C got the money after Kenny had to get his slide rule out to separate them. The consistent George Smithers got the nod in 2nd spot from Graham Rieke , with George adding the Drive and Pitch on the 9th to his tally for the day.

Mr Popular , BARRY MILLER put 41 points on the board to romp home in B Grade from Jason Hopkins on 39 , who like his counterpart in A Grade added the Nearest the Pin prize on the 2nd Hole. Bob “GOTTASEEABARBER”  Connell was a further two points back in 3rd Place.

Whilst I have to admit that The Links is not my favourite Course, it agreed with my game in C Grade, but it may have been Caffeine assisted or was it the inspiring company of my Playing Partners. Not surprisingly the 18th with the extra Spectator was the only hole I failed to score ….must admit I prefer not to be in the same suburb as a snake !!! Well done Steve Barrington coming home with 41 and collecting the Nearest the Pin on Number 11 hole. Good to see Carlo Dressino winning 4 balls in third place, very handy at this course, as we have all donated many over the years.
