Men’s Bowling Club News
Congratulations to Jayden Gebbie who won the Club Handicap singles.
The state pennants have just been completed and I would like to thank the directors, umpires, and volunteers who helped make the hosting of Grade 5 pennants a great success. The Club’s quest for a State pennant flag was disappointing, with the 1’s finishing equal third after losing their semi-final to St. Johns Park and the 3’s finishing out of contention after not reaching their full potential in sectional play.
The annual Wayne Crane over 50s Pairs will be held on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th November and with $10,000 in prize money, its well worth a run.
Congratulations to Jamie Nabbe who reached the semi of the Zone Champion of Champion singles, narrowly losing to Shane Garvey 31 – 28 after leading 19 – 9.
There have been some great wins around the traps, with the highlights being Jeremy Henry’s Golden Nugget victory, Aaron Teys winning the Australian Indoor and Jesse Noronha and Matt Miles prevailing in the State Pairs Championships- congratulations to all.
The BPL is on again from 12th -15th November and you will be able to watch the Illawarra Gorillas (Jeremy Henry, Aaron Teys and Kay Moran with master coach Wes Falconer) live on FOX sports.
In an exciting coup, Warilla Bowling Club has been named as the inaugural host venue for the Ultimate Bowls Championship (UBC), to be held on 4th-5th April 2019. Watch this space for more news as preparations for the UBC get underway.
Congratulations to Teddy Treue on his election to Life Membership of the Club at the recent AGM.
Bowls Premier League
The Illawarra Gorillas made their debut in the Bowls Premier League this November and what a debut it was! After four tough days of nail biting competition the Gorillas scraped through to the minor semi-final, but it was on and up from there. Firstly beating a red hot Alex Marshall and his Brisbane team in the minor semi-final, then following up with a great win, sealed by a Jeremy Henry bomb in the final against the Murray Steamers.
And so the debutants made it to the Grand Final, only to go down to an in form Sydney Lions team and finish runners-up in the tournament. A sensational result which would not have been without our major sponsor, Silkari, and our sleeve sponsor XXXX Gold. The next instalment of the BPL is in April 2018, to be played in Wellington New Zealand.
Supporters shirts are now available for sale in the bowls shop for $49.50. So buy your gear and get behind the team in April.

These past winter months have seen our girls excelling in competitions. Leone Barnett, Julea Morgan and Vicki Turner won the District Triples defeating Windang at Windang. At Club level our Major Fours winners were Trish Orgill, Pam Willets, Norma Taylor and Shirley Berry with runners up Marion Skinner, Judith Hirjee, Rita McBlain and Colleen Galvin.
Our Club Major Triples winners were L. Barnett, J.Morgan and R. Ledgerwood who replaced Vicki Turner on the day, narrowly defeating J. Taylor, M Murphy and B. O’Donnell 22-20.
This month we farewell and thank President Christine for her leadership and contribution over the past 3 years. We congratulate and welcome Judi Hirjee as our new President. Assisting President Judi will be newly elected Vice Presidents Rita McBlain and Tracey Coulstock. Congratulations to both. Heather Skinner will continue as Secretary and Betty Anderson as Treasurer. Many thanks from all of us to you both for your dedication in running our Club. Jo Hill was farewelled and thanked as Head of Match Committee. She was also one of our Umpires. Jo is giving up Bowling to pursue other interests. We wish her well.
I am delighted to be able to report that Betty Anderson was unanimously voted by the membership at the A.G.M. to be granted Life Membership of our Club. There have only been three Life Memberships given in our Club. The first was Helen Troy then Heather Skinner last year and now Betty. This vote indicates the appreciation we feel towards Betty for her gracious and dedicated service in the various roles she has undertaken in our Club. Thank you Betty.
Our District Triples winners L. Burnett, J. Morgan and V. Turner played at the Regional play-off at Towradgi Park defeating Goulburn to become our Regional Representatives, though bowing out in the State play-offs at Taren Point in August. Congratulations to this great team of achievers!
I was fortunate enough to go to the Central Coast to watch our Ones and Threes play at the State Pennant Play-offs. Although we didn’t win a flag our girls played with great enthusiasm and determination. They were excited with their wins and gracious in defeat.

SCUTTLEBUTT: 30 Players headed South for The John O’Neil Dedicated 2 Ball Championship at Berry by The Beach on a Day just made for Golf : you would not want to have been anywhere else !! Not a bad concept this one with Partners drawn prior to The Event and one gets to play with Members we haven’t accompanied for quite a while; in my case I drew WOZZA and at times we were as bad as each other , but Geeze it was fun ……. gotta get that Putting Matt Out AND USE IT !! We accompanied Kenny Sawers and Adam Williams and there were plenty of Laughs and Big Hitting , especially from Adam, Wow , he can hit a Tee Shot !! Kenny of course was very excited about The Rabbits Chances on The Weekend, but it was not to be , and was a pretty ordinary game….. but there is always next year ?? I’m a Master of such situations , just ask CROWLS !! Wozza wisely said to me at the first Hole that it would take 50 Points to win this Event !! Nostradamus !! Have to mention Kenny’s Bunker Shot late in the Round STRAIGHT IN THE HOLE ……. never looked like missing.
Great to see a change in The Winners List with Garry Pearse and Victor (GRAPPA) Koloski coming out on top by just a mere Point !! No surprise to see the name of MR V.C. coming home 2nd but Partnered with Raging Ronnie Little , now that is Fun Social Golf … bet Vic had a few laughs en route !! Jeff Little crook again , hope you are on the mend and up to Calderwood next Week.
Coming in 3rd on C/B were Les Banks and the consistent EGGS Strachan. My thanks to them and to George Ducrou for making our New Member and my , Number ONE son , Tim welcome and encouraging him as he returns to the Game after four years absence…… typical of this trait was Eric’ Gift of one of his Winning Balls to Tim , post match, to replace one or two “left in the woods” ……. it is acts like this that make our great Club what it is !!
As I said at Presentations , our sincere thanks to all THE WORKERS who put the BBQ together, organising and transporting it all and then not forgetting our cooks and Bus Driver , “BRAIN” doing double duty last week. Your efforts are very much appreciated .
